The Importance of Reading With Your Child

A guide for parents on the importance of reading with your child.

Reading is a necessary life skill that child will utilise for the rest of their life. Reading with your child is important and should not be a task that is solely the responsibility of the teacher. Here are the reasons why it is important to read with your child.

Supporting Their Education

One of the most important reasons for reading with your child is to support their education. Reading will not only improve their literacy skills, it will improve their ability to access and absorb information in subjects across the curriculum. The ability to read at a functional level will ensure that they can reach their full potential at school.

Bonding Time

Reading is a great way of spending time with your children and bonding with them. It lets your child know that you are willing to spend time with them, that you are supportive of their learning and that you enjoy their company. It only takes a short amount of time each evening to read with your child. With younger children it is a good idea to read a story at bedtime with them as part of their daily routine. When your child starts school, they will probably bring home a book to read each evening. This doesn’t mean that you are limited to only reading books provided by school.

Enjoyment

Reading can become more than a source of learning for your child. It can become a pleasurable activity that they enjoy doing in their spare time. Parents can encourage this by ensuring that their child has a wide range of reading resources available to them. It can also broaden their enjoyment of other activities, such as puzzles, that require reading.

Daily Functioning

Supporting your child with their reading will develop their reading to a functional level or beyond. This will prepare them for adult life. Reading is a necessary skill in day to day functions. Everything from shopping to being able to read a bus timetable will require them to be able to read. Having poor reading skills can severely impair their ability to function in normal daily activities in later life.

Employment

Most jobs require at least basic literacy skills. Supporting your child’s reading will prepare them for the world of work. The further you develop their reading skills, the wider their prospects for future employment. Poor reading skills can limit your options for employment and prevent them from gaining the necessary qualifications for certain careers.
