Tips on How to Avoid Examination Anxiety

Exam anxiety is a fairly common phenomenon that involves feelings of tension or uneasiness that occur before, during, or after an exam . Here are some tips on how to avoid this problem.

Examination anxiety is real. There are many students who get so upset that a couple of minutes before the exam, they have to leave the room to throw up. Some students break out into a rash. A few shake so badly that they can’t write. What’s the best way to avoid such reactions? The answer is simple: Be prepared.

Of course, even the best prepared students are occasionally going to have rumbly gust as exam time, but the chances are they are going to be better off in respect than their fellow students who are not as well prepared. A good way to approach exams with confidence is to assess your preparation. Are you doing things the right way? Is this course going to require more study and review than you though? If so, revise your schedule.

Besides being well prepared, there are a few other things you can do to reduce your anxiety. Some of them are little things such as getting to the exam well before it begins. Avoid being rushed; rushing only aggravates your nervousness. Spend the few minutes before an exam in small talk or reading the campus paper, or doing anything that will put you in a mood to relax.

A last-minute frantic review while waiting for the exam to be handed out will only increase your panic by telling you there are things you don’t know. For the same reason, don’t talk about the exam with other students; they may have studied things you overlooked. That can also cause you to panic.

Don’t let yourself get rattled in the course of the examination. If you feel that you can’t remember your own name, you need to be better prepared than other students. Some people are impervious to the kinds of challenges an exam provides, while others go to pieces. If your tendency is to go to pieces, you’ve got to be thoroughly prepared. You will find that, as you gain confidence in your ability to cope with the stress of an exam, you will gradually lose the tendency to fall apart. Above all don’t use the excuse to test anxiety to take the blame that belongs to poor preparation.

The last and most important thing you can do to bolster your confidence is to have a strategy for taking the exam. People who know what to do in emergencies don’t panic. This holds for taking exams. You probably know what kind of exam to expect. There is a sensible way to go about taking each kind. Know what it is and be prepared to carry out your plan as soon as you get the signal to go ahead.
