Understanding Study Skills Needed As a Student

A guide for students on the study skills that are needed to be a successful student and reach their full potential in their learning.

There are many different aspects to studying.  These can be divided into different study skills.  At different stages of studying different skills will be required to complete activities, assignments and overall learning.  Here is an overview of different study skills that are needed to make the most of the learning experience.

Physical skills

Often, it is necessary to learn a physical skill.  This could be touch typing, using computer programmes, operating machinery, or, in the case of medical professionals, administering stitches.  Many educational programmes or careers will require you to learn physical skills.  In most cases, the mind does not influence the speed of learning these skills, it is purely down to practise.

Studying and learning will require the student to use different techniques.  Sometimes the same task can be completed using a number of different techniques.  For example, there are numerous techniques to note taking and a number of different techniques to complete the same functions when word processing on the computer.  Learning different techniques is usually done by working through exercises and practising.  The techniques that work best for the individual can then be applied in their studying to improve their performance.  Techniques can be applied to assignment work in everything from how assignments are structured to how notes are filed.

Strategies require thinking through.  Strategies for students often include time allocation for studying, how to prepare for an assignment or the support that they use in their learning, whether this be from a tutor or from their peers.  There are usually three stages involved in developing studying strategies.  These are reflecting on past experiences, predicting what will happen in the future and what their needs will be and analysing what resources are available for study and how these can be utilised for the best outcome.

The final category of study skill is the ability to understand the process of studying.  Understanding comes in the final presentation of work, such as an essay or a presentation.  At the beginning of your studies it is easy to focus on one element of a task and overlook other areas.  For example, you may focus on presenting one set of facts but give no thought to giving contrasting views for comparison.  To show full understanding is a complex process that a student will become more adept at over time and requires them utilising their studying habits, physical skills, techniques and strategies together. Understanding is then shown in their overall performance.
